Oscillating lawn sprinklers distribute a rectangular path of water through holes in an arm that slowly moves from side to side. These above-ground sprinklers attach to a garden hose and have either a single dial or dual adjustment rings to control the distance and pattern of irrigation. Application of water to an open area of lawn is best on the largest width in both directions for maximum coverage in each swath. The spray width near concrete walkways and driveways is adjustable to decrease water waste and cost by wetting areas that do not have grass or plants.
Single Dial
- Connect a garden hose to a single dial oscillating lawn sprinkler. Stand on the end of the sprinkler that connects to the hose.
- Turn the adjustment dial to “Right” to cover ground from the center of the sprinkler to the right side of it at the farthest distance of throw.
- Twist the round dial to “Left” to water your lawn from the center of the sprinkler body to the leftmost side at the farthest setting.
- Adjust the dial to “Center” for irrigation that is only a few feet to the left and right of the sprinkler.
- Rotate the adjustment dial to “Full” for maximum distance on both left and right sides of the sprinkler body.
Dual Adjustment Rings
- Stand facing the sprinkler from the end that attaches to a garden hose.
- Turn the adjustment ring nearest to you to the positive (+) direction to increase the water flow on the right side of the sprinkler. Move the ring to the negative (-) direction to decrease the distance of water flow on the right side of the sprinkler. An arrow on the ring points to the right for the right side adjustments.
- Spin the farthest adjustment ring from where you are standing to the positive (+) direction to increase the water distance or to the negative (-) direction to decrease the distance on the left side of the sprinkler. This ring has an arrow pointing left for the left side water adjustments.
Tip
Make small, incremental adjustments on dual ring sprinklers to achieve the exact path of water. Turn the garden hose on at the spigot and check the spray pattern. Make more adjustments, as needed. Water lawns early in the morning to reduce water waste and loss to evaporation. Fertilize grass on the low end of the package recommendation to avoid excessive growth leading to increased water needs.
Clay soils hold more water than sandy soils and need less frequent watering. Grass contains roots in the top 8 to 12 inches of soil. There is no need to water lawns to a deeper level. Watering at this maximum depth conserves water.
